Pomegranate in Ayurveda
Pomegranate, known in Ayurveda as Dadima, is a highly valued fruit traditionally used both as food and as an ingredient in various Ayurvedic formulations. It is widely cultivated in India, and its fruit and different parts of the plant have been used in traditional Ayurvedic practices for centuries.
According to Ayurveda, pomegranate has refreshing and nourishing properties. Its juicy seeds and juice are particularly valued for their ability to quench thirst, refresh the body and support vitality.
In the Ayurvedic tradition, Dadima is primarily associated with the digestive system and the balance of Agni – the digestive fire. Pomegranate is traditionally used to support normal digestion and the absorption of nutrients, while at the same time being considered relatively gentle on the digestive tract.
A special place is given to its connection with Grahani – an Ayurvedic concept closely associated with the function of the small intestine, digestion and the proper absorption of food. Traditionally, Dadima is used to support the cleansing and normal function of the intestinal tract, as well as in cases of various forms of digestive discomfort. In this context, pomegranate is regarded as a fruit that helps maintain balance within the digestive system without placing an excessive burden on it.
In Ayurveda, pomegranate is also associated with Rakta Dhatu – the tissue traditionally related to the blood. For this reason, Dadima is included in traditional practices aimed at nourishing and cleansing the body. Its combination of nourishing and refreshing qualities also makes it a valued fruit during periods of fatigue and increased need for restoration.
Pomegranate is a natural source of various nutrients and antioxidant compounds. It contains vitamin C, minerals and plant polyphenols, while modern research has also explored its potential role in supporting cardiovascular health.
